I was very pleased to have a painting selected for the Biennial show held by the Royal Western Academy. The painting is titled Hudson Bay (oil on paper, 16 x 12 inches/ 41 x 31 cm) and is part of the ongoing project Taught by Thirst.
Paper Works, the RWA’s Biennial exhibition, was all about paper. Selected from an open submission it celebrated paper as a surface for drawing and printmaking and as a sculptural material. Paper was the star of the show revealing itself in many different guises. Hand made paper, different types of Japanese tissue, papier maché, and paper pulp were just some of the materials being used to create drawings paintings sculpture and architectural models.
The work in the exhibition ranged from powerful visceral charcoal drawings to hangings so delicate as they moved in the still air that it almost seemed as if they do not exist. There were tiny intimate paintings, exquisite fine line drawings on costly cotton rag paper and expressive vibrant works on packaging cardboard and paper animal feed sacks. A fantastic show of very varied and interesting work, and I was very proud to be a part of it.
